Goofy Bear Boki Undergoes Groundbreaking Brain Surgery, Now on the Mend
In a heartwarming tale of resilience and innovation, Boki, a two-year-old brown bear residing at the Wildwood Trust near Canterbury, Kent, has made history as the first animal in the UK to undergo a cutting-edge brain operation. Following a challenging procedure that lasted five-and-a-half hours—double the expected time—Boki is now on the road to recovery after facing serious health challenges, including seizures attributed to a troubling build-up of fluid on his brain.
Boki's journey to surgery began with an MRI scan that revealed the concerning condition affecting his health. The prospect of such a delicate operation weighed heavily on the minds of the Wildwood Trust staff, who have cared for the bear since he was rescued as a cub. Animal Behaviour Management Officer Becky Copland expressed the emotional toll it took on the team, stating, “It’s emotional—Boki has been through so much, and we've seen that.”
After the procedure, the staff reported that Boki was a bit tired and uncomfortable but responded positively to treatment. “He had some grapes and honey water, and medication, so it's good,” Copland added, highlighting the bright moments in his recovery. The affection and care shown by the staff have created a bond with Boki—a bear often described as goofy and charming.
International Zoo Veterinary Group’s Elliot Simpson played a crucial role in the operation and noted Boki’s character during the recovery process. “Boki has done incredibly well. He’s young and emotional, so we expected him to be quiet after such a big procedure,” Simpson explained. However, it appears Boki's friendly demeanor is helping him heal; he seemed to perk up when staff visited him the day after surgery, eager for their company. “It seemed to spur him on, so he’s forgiven us for the operation, which is good,” Simpson said.
The surgery itself was performed by specialist wildlife veterinary surgeon Dr. Romain Pizzi, a pioneer in this type of veterinary procedure. “He’s a very trusting, friendly bear. There's something goofy about him,” Dr. Pizzi remarked, immediately forming a connection with Boki. “He is a real character, and I can see why everyone bonded with him,” he continued, emphasizing the unique personality that has endeared Boki to both the staff and visitors of the Wildwood Trust.
While the immediate signs of recovery are promising, Dr. Pizzi stressed that a waiting game now unfolds. “It’s crucial to see what happens over the coming weeks and months. Has it all done what we want it to? We have to wait and see,” he said, with hope and concern mingling in his tone. The dedicated veterinary team, alongside the Wildwood Trust staff, remains committed to monitoring Boki’s progress and providing him with the love and care he needs during this recovery phase.
Boki’s story has sparked widespread interest and affection, illustrating the unique bond between wild animals and those who dedicate their lives to protecting them. As this goofy bear takes his first steps toward recovery, the Wildwood Trust community and animal lovers everywhere are united in keeping their fingers crossed for his healing journey.
