Age 18 - Age 70: A Wedding with Obstacles
From the very beginning, Jason's family disapproved of his relationship with 70-year-old Margaret. When the unconventional couple decided to officially seal their love through marriage, it was too much for Jason's family to bear.
As soon as Jason turned 18, his parents went to the extreme of disowning him, all because of his decision to marry Margaret. Little did they know that Jason had a compelling reason for wanting to marry her.
Cut-off from Family Contact
Jason made desperate attempts to reach out to his family, but they simply refused to answer his calls, no matter when he tried to contact them.
Margaret was devastated to learn that she was the cause of Jason's family troubles. She couldn't fathom that their reaction would be so extreme.
Lack of Support from Margaret's Family
When Margaret revealed the news to her children, they too were taken aback. The significant age difference seemed unnatural, as Jason was only half as old as Margaret's youngest daughter.
Her children suggested that Jason might be marrying her for her money. However, Margaret reassured them that it couldn't be farther from the truth.
Sending Wedding Invitations
Despite the lack of support from their families, Jason and Margaret decided to send out wedding invitations regardless.
Jason particularly hoped that his family might change their minds and attend the wedding despite all the disputes. However, something unexpected happened.
Unopened Invitations
After a few days, Jason received what he secretly feared all along. As he fetched the mail from the mailbox that morning, he let out a sigh of disappointment.
The invitations to his family were returned unopened. It was a strong statement from his family, indicating that they would never support his decision to go through with the wedding.
An Angry Letter
Not only that, but Jason also received a letter from his family expressing their deep anger and lack of support for his choices.
They believed he was still too young and going through a rebellious phase. This reaction was all too typical of his family and only fueled Jason's anger further.
The Wedding Proceeds!
However, Margaret and Jason had solid reasons to go through with the wedding, reasons that had nothing to do with youthful rebellion.
At the wedding, Jason planned to share the truth with both families. This had to be kept strictly confidential between him and Margaret; no one else could find out. They both had their reasons for keeping it private.
A Visit from His Father
One evening, Jason unexpectedly heard a knock on the door. He wasn't expecting anyone, so he had no idea who could be standing outside his door at this hour.
To his complete surprise, when he opened the door, his father was standing there with an unexpected guest.
A Companion
Without any courtesy, his father barged uninvited into the apartment, barely saying a word. He mumbled something about "needing to talk," as if he had sole authority over the situation.
Jason was dumbfounded. Then his father told him that he had brought a therapist along, who would now help Jason rid himself of his rebellious views. Jason didn't know what to say.
Jason became angry
His father told Jason that he would never be welcome back home if he didn't accept this help. It was a grave threat that even shocked the therapist.
Jason didn't know if he should be disappointed or angry at his father now. A wave of anger was followed by a wave of pity. Pity for a person consumed by hatred.
A Clear Message
"How do you expect me to visit people who refuse to celebrate my wedding, who refuse to wish me and my bride happiness?"
Jason asked his father.
Now, Jason's father had to swallow hard. The therapist recognized that he could only lose in this situation and therefore said nothing. "If you don't have anything positive to say, then you can leave now!" Jason continued, gesturing towards the still-open door.
Sad Margaret
Margaret had heard everything that Jason and his father had said. She had been upstairs when the knocking came, and as a precaution, she stayed there.
Her presence would have only escalated the argument. She didn't exactly know what Jason's father was capable of, and since the first time she saw him, she had been afraid of him. Jason reassured her.
True Love
Jason told Margaret that his parents would eventually pay the price for what they were doing. He had never felt so betrayed in his life.
He felt his father had no idea what true love really meant. He was simply very jealous. Jason's first step towards revenge was to hire a lawyer.
Sending a Lawyer
Jason decided to hire a lawyer because he knew something that his father didn't. His father often loudly threatened to disinherit him.
But that wasn't so simple in the state where Jason and his parents lived. Children were entitled to a compulsory share. Jason wasn't after his father's money, but he would use it to annoy him.
Call from His Sister
The next day, Jason's phone rang. It was his sister calling. He hadn't spoken to her in two years, ever since he started his relationship with Margaret.
She told him that she would attend the wedding and that she was proud of him. When Jason revealed his secret, she gasped and said she would help him bring their parents to the wedding too.
Margaret's Family Arrives
Margaret's family decided that they would come, even if they didn't agree with the whole situation. This strengthened both Jason and Margaret. Jason knew this was serving a good purpose; he wouldn't back down now.
Jason still had hope when he spoke to his sister. His mother was persuaded by his sister to attend the wedding. However, his father still wanted nothing to do with it. That's when Jason decided to go to his parents' house.
Visiting His Parents
Jason hopped into his car to drive to his parents' house. He was somewhat nervous about how his father would react. He knew his sister was at home, so he could enter anytime. But he had to face his father.
Jason brought a letter in a sealed envelope. This letter contained the real reason why he wanted to marry Margaret. This was his last chance to break through to his father.
Deepest Secrets
This was something between him and Margaret that only other people should know after the wedding. However, Jason's father's extreme reaction forced him to come up with this last resort.
He knocked on the door nervously, unsure of who might be inside the house. After hearing some sounds and waiting for a while, someone finally opened the door, allowing Jason to breathe a sigh of relief.
Father Opens Up
His father opened the door, seemingly expecting Jason. Jason believes that his sister must have already prepared their parents for Jason's visit that day. His father didn't say much, but he let Jason in.
His mother rushed to Jason and hugged him. She hadn't seen Jason since he left the house. She seemed glad that Jason was at the door. However, his father silenced them both and told Jason that he was suffering from delusions.
Jason Can't Break Through
Jason couldn't really handle his father's tirade. He kept trying, but to no avail. He didn't know what to do. He desperately wanted his parents to attend the wedding, but his father kept ignoring him. There was only one option left.
Jason left the sealed envelope and told his parents to read it, warning them that they would regret being so harsh to him if they didn't. His father yelled that he wouldn't read it, but Jason had a feeling he would.
Preparing for the Wedding
Jason and Margaret still had a lot of preparation to do for the wedding. This helped Jason distract himself from the family struggles. He hoped he would hear from them, but the days went by, and the wedding was getting closer.
A day before the wedding, there was still no message from Jason's family. He had a feeling they wouldn't come, but he needed them there. He even tried calling them but got no answer. Did they even read the letter?
Jason Gets More Anxious
Jason felt increasingly anxious. He didn't know what he had to do. He felt hopeless. He discussed it with Margaret, and she felt there was only one solution. Jason didn't like the idea Margaret had.
Margaret wanted to retract their invitation and remove them from the guest list. Jason didn't want to hear that. He told Margaret that he wanted to trust them for now. Maybe they were just too proud to admit their mistakes.
Jason Knew They Would Come
Deep down, Jason knew they would come to the wedding, but now it was getting too close. Tomorrow was the wedding day, and Jason hadn't heard anything.
On the night before the wedding, Jason could hardly sleep. Why would they play with his feelings like that? He tossed and turned all night, getting only a few hours of sleep.
The Big Day
On the wedding day, Jason woke up with a terrible feeling. He had barely slept, and the few hours he did sleep were filled with strange nightmares.
His nightmare was about his parents showing up just to ruin the whole wedding. But on this big day, something else was about to happen.
Jason Has a Strange Feeling
As he prepared for the wedding on the morning of the big day, Jason still had no one from his family around. Then, he heard a knock on his door.
His heart skipped a beat. He now had high hopes that his parents would finally come to visit him. However, when he opened the door, he saw someone else.
Sister Arrives
Jason locked eyes with his sister, Lily. He felt a little relieved that at least a dear person from his family had come for his big day.
She immediately flew into his arms. Jason had missed his sister very much, and it meant a lot to him that she had come at least. Then he asked her the most important question.
Where is the family?
Jason immediately asked his sister, Lily, about the rest of their family. But Lily told Jason that she had run away from home herself to come to the wedding.
She had no idea what the rest of the family would do. Ever since Jason left the sealed envelope at their parents' house, they had been arguing about him nonstop.
She thinks their parents won't come
Lily honestly believed that their parents wouldn't come to the wedding. She felt that their domineering father would block any attempts made by their mother.
Their mother did want to witness the big day with her son, but their father threatened to leave her if she did. It was a terrible situation.
Arrival of the Grandparents
Then, they heard more noises at the end of the hallway, two familiar voices conversing. Jason recognized the voices and felt even more relieved.
As he approached the voices, he saw his grandparents, who had decided to come as well. But then, it was time for the wedding.
No Time to Waste
There was no time to waste; they had to begin the wedding, there was no other choice. They couldn't keep waiting for people who might never show up. Jason gave the green light and then fell to his knees; he didn't deserve this.
Jason didn't know how to react; he was overwhelmed with tears. He felt betrayed by his family while he was trying his best to make something of his life. His parents were just not satisfied with his choices. It was time to walk down the aisle.
Walking Down the Aisle
Jason wasn't really present in the moment. He kept thinking about his parents and why they hadn't read the letter. If they had read it, they would surely have come. All of this would then make sense to them. Then, he heard some commotion.
Everyone heard loud noises in the hallway. Nobody knew exactly what was going on. Jason had a feeling, but he didn't want to get his hopes up. Then, the doors at the back of the church opened, and Jason felt relieved.
Parents Arrive
His parents walked directly into the church; they seemed to be in a hurry. They probably hadn't planned to be late. Jason felt relieved that they had opened the letter. He just needed confirmation that they weren't here to ruin the wedding.
Jason tried to make eye contact with his father repeatedly, trying to gauge why he was there. Finally, they locked eyes, and his father continued to stare at him. Seconds felt like minutes, and then finally, Jason got what he wanted.
Father Nods
His father nodded at Jason, giving him the best feeling in the world. He knew his father had read the letter and agreed to his plan. His father even gave him a slight smile, and Jason had never felt so good in his life.
Jason wanted to reveal to all the guests why he married Margaret. He knew no one would expect the true reason behind this plan he and Margaret had devised, but they had succeeded.
Shocked Priest
The priest who married them was shocked when he saw the couple and their age difference, but he didn't judge. He decided to bless them, and Jason kissed Margaret. He whispered in her ear, "We did it."
They were finally married, and Jason planned to announce their intentions later in the day during the party. Margaret was relieved too. Since becoming a widow, she had felt very uncertain, and this gave her what she wanted.
Jason Grabs the Microphone
Then the party began. Jason and Margaret were having the time of their lives. After a few hours, Jason decided it was a good time to tell all the guests what was going on.
Of course, his parents and sister already knew by now, but the rest of the guests had no idea. Jason grabbed the microphone and started speaking.
No Residence Permit
Jason was relieved that he no longer had to keep this secret to himself. He told the crowd first that he didn't marry Margaret out of love.
Immediately, everyone fell silent. Jason told them that it wasn't about money either. His motive was much nobler. Jason married Margaret to help her stay in the country.
She had come to the country out of love 50 years ago, but she had been living here illegally all this time. Marrying Jason would help her obtain a residence permit. Everyone let out sighs of surprise.
Jason sternly warned all the guests not to tell anyone the true reason. Otherwise, the state could annul the wedding and deport Margaret.
The Best Feeling in the World!
Fortunately, they succeeded and didn't have to worry about anything anymore. It was the best feeling in the world. Everyone clapped, sensing that Jason was doing something remarkable.
But would his plan work? Or had he jeopardized the success of the plan with his announcement? Would all the guests keep the secret? Only time would tell, and we won't know for sure until a few years pass.
