'He Lived in a Birdcage for Years': Tabby Cat Rescued Just in Time From Cruel Captivity in New Jersey

OLD BRIDGE, NEW JERSEY – It's a scene almost impossible to imagine, yet it's true. A tabby cat named Oliver spent years of his life confined inside a birdcage, forgotten by the very person who was supposed to care for him. His rescue came just in time.
During a family gathering at a house in New Jersey, a guest noticed something strange: a feline locked inside a cage designed for a bird. When the guest asked the owner for an explanation, the answer was chilling. The animal, she said, was scratching the furniture. Even worse, she admitted to regularly "forgetting" to give him food and water for several days at a time.
Refusing to turn a blind eye, the witness patiently gained the owner's trust to successfully rescue the animal. She then appealed to the local community for help.

Waiting for a Family

Taken in by the Happy Homes Animal Rescue association in Old Bridge, Oliver was in poor condition. His back was curved—a direct result of years spent cramped inside a cage far too small for a cat. Veterinary examinations revealed a spinal deformity caused by the captivity. Fortunately, the condition did not appear to cause him pain.
Despite everything, Oliver began to relax. He explored his new surroundings with cautious curiosity. The transformation was slow but steady.

Six Months Later: Unrecognizable

Today, six months after his rescue, Oliver is a different cat. Estimated to be between three and five years old, he now leads the life of an almost normal feline.
He still bears psychological scars. When stressed, he nibbles at his own fur—a lingering habit from his traumatic past. But he gets along perfectly with other cats. He is extremely playful and affectionate. And, in a twist of irony, he doesn't damage the furniture at all.
The shelter is now searching for his forever home—a place where he will never again know the inside of a cage.
