Adoptable Pets from LA Wildfires Find a Safe Haven in Utah

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary has opened its arms to a group of adoptable pets from shelters affected by the fires in Los Angeles. As the flames spread, many pets were left frightened and homeless. Clementine, a young orange-and-white kitty with a broken jaw, and Picasso, a 70-pound black dog with a distinctive underbite, were among the first to be evacuated from California. Both were in shelters when the wildfires erupted, and they were among the initial group of pets transported to safety as part of Best Friends' response to the crisis that has impacted millions of residents and their pets in Los Angeles.
The mission to relocate these pets was a coordinated effort. Staff carefully loaded Picasso, Clementine, and around 30 other dogs and cats into a van for the long journey to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Volunteers from Cat World and Dogtown eagerly awaited their arrival, ready to provide the necessary care and attention these animals deserved. This was just the first of many trips from the smoke-choked city to Utah, where a dedicated community stood ready to offer help in any way possible.
Darling Clementine
Upon arrival, Clementine's first stop was the Best Friends Animal Clinic. Here, she received immediate veterinary care, including pain relief and antibiotics to prevent infection. Alongside her broken jaw, veterinarians discovered a painful laceration on her tongue. Despite her injuries, Clementine's sweet and affectionate nature shone through, endearing her to everyone she met.
Lori Fusaro, a Best Friends photographer based in Los Angeles, recalls her first encounter with Clementine: "I fell in love with her the moment I saw her. She is the sweetest thing, and as soon as you pick her up, she starts to purr."
This resilient little feline is now recuperating comfortably in her cozy space at the clinic, continuing to charm staff and volunteers alike with her loving disposition.
Picasso's Journey
Picasso's journey to Utah was equally transformative. Settling into his new temporary home at Dogtown, he quickly became a favorite among the volunteers. His distinctive underbite and gentle demeanor made him stand out, and his playful spirit brought smiles to all who interacted with him.
