Humped to Death by a Pet Camel: A Tragic Incident
A randy camel has tragically led to the death of its owner, Pam Weaver, after it attempted to mate with her. The ten-month-old camel weighed around 150kg (23st 8lb) and, in a horrifying turn of events, knocked Mrs. Weaver to the ground before trying to straddle her.
A Shocking Discovery
Noel Weaver, Pam's husband, returned home on Saturday to find his wife's lifeless body. At the time of the incident, Mrs. Weaver was in the midst of cooking dinner, with a cup of tea sitting on the table. The camel had been roaming freely in the backyard of their sheep and cattle ranch located near Mitchell, 600km (350 miles) west of Brisbane.
Erratic Behavior
The camel had a history of erratic behavior, often displaying attempts to straddle other animals, including the family’s pet goat. Detective Craig Gregory commented on the incident, suggesting that the camel may have been playing or engaging in a sexual behavior towards Mrs. Weaver.
Mrs. Weaver had a passion for exotic pets, leading her family to consider purchasing a llama or alpaca before deciding on the camel, which they found to be more affordable.
Expert Insights
Camel expert Chris Hill, who has provided camel rides to tourists for over 20 years, confirmed that the camel's actions were likely sexual in nature. According to Mr. Hill, while young camels may not typically be aggressive, they can pose risks when kept as pets if not handled properly.
A Growing Problem
The incident sheds light on the growing population of wild camels in Australia. Introduced in the 1800s as pack animals, these camels have since thrived in the Australian environment. Their increase in numbers raises concerns about their behavior and the risks associated with keeping them as non-traditional pets.
This bizarre and tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of exotic animals and the potential dangers that can arise when humans attempt to domesticate them.
