Heartbreaking Loss: A Canine Hero Remembered
In a tragic turn of events, a man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after killing Bingo, a beloved service dog with the Toronto police. The emotional repercussions of this case were felt deeply within the community, as many mourned the loss of a loyal companion who served with dedication.

Kenneth Grant received his sentence on Tuesday, following a guilty plea to multiple charges, including manslaughter and the homicide of a service animal. This resolution comes two years after a harrowing incident that shook the city. Initially charged with the second-degree murder of his daughter’s boyfriend, Sophonias Haile, the details surrounding that evening reveal a story fraught with tension and conflict.
The events unfolded on July 24, after an aggressive altercation between Haile and Grant's daughter escalated. In a tragic confrontation, Grant confronted Haile and, in a fit of anger, drew a firearm, discharging it multiple times and ultimately striking Haile in the head. The aftermath was chaotic; Grant was soon on the run, bringing a police investigation to a head.
As officers closed in on him, service dog Bingo and his handler, Sergeant Brandon Smith, were called to help. This incredible two-year-old German Shepherd had only recently joined the force after 16 weeks of challenging training, and he was known for his keen senses and unwavering loyalty. Sadly, during the search, Grant resisted capture, resorting to gunfire once again—this time, tragically, it was Bingo who suffered the consequence, succumbing to injuries sustained in the encounter.
In court, Justice Maureen Forestell reflected on the case, emphasizing the recklessness of Grant's actions and condemning the killing of Bingo as a "cowardly, calculated, and callous act." The loss of this brave dog, the first service animal to die in the line of duty for Toronto police, remains a poignant reminder of the risks faced daily by those who serve.

“Today’s sentencing concludes the criminal case, but the loss of PSD Bingo remains deeply felt,” stated Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw in tribute to the fallen canine. “He made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our officers and our city. We honor Bingo's courage and the dedication of our members during this heartbreaking chapter.”
In the wake of this tragedy, the community joins in paying tribute to Bingo, a true hero who served with unwavering courage and commitment, and who will forever hold a place in the hearts of those he helped protect.
